Prince Harry has stated that he only sobbed once after his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, died in 1997.

In a new interview footage advertising the release of his autobiography Spare, Prince Harry recalls how he and Prince William were unable to display emotion while meeting mourners in public.

The Duke of Sussex expressed “guilt” as he walked among the crowds who had laid flowers outside Kensington Palace.

The absence of Princess Diana in Prince Harry’s life is a recurring subject in Spare.

In the ITV interview, which will air on Sunday evening, Prince Harry stated that “everyone remembers where they were” when his mother was killed in a car accident in Paris in August 1997.

He said he had watched video of himself and his brother visiting mourners a few days later.

“I cried once, at the funeral, and you know I go into depth [in Spare] about how bizarre it was and how there was some guilt that I felt, and I believe William felt as well, just strolling around the outside of Kensington Palace,” he explained.

“There were 50,000 flower bouquets for our mother, and there we were, shaking people’s hands and beaming…

“Everyone thought and felt like they knew our mum, and the two closest people to her, the two most loved people by her, were unable to display any emotion in that time,” Prince Harry writes.

Details about Prince Harry’s walk behind his mother’s coffin at her funeral, when throngs approached him, and how he felt unable to mourn in public are included in Spare.

He also talks about arranging a driver to take him through the road tunnel in Paris where his mother died, searching for closure after a “decade of continuous pain”.

And, when sitting on his bed in Balmoral, he claims his father did not hug him when he broke the news that Princess Diana had died.

Among the other disclosures in Spare are Prince Harry’s claim that he was physically assaulted by his brother, details about how Harry lost his virginity, information about drug use, and a claim that he killed 25 Taliban militants while fighting in Afghanistan.

A number of prominent military veterans have criticized his claim that he killed Taliban fighters.

Ex-colonel Tim Collins, best remembered for delivering the Eve-of-Battle address during the Iraq War in which he urged his officers to “show respect,” said Prince Harry had “badly let the side down” and “we don’t do notches on the rifle butt”.

Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace have both stated that they will not comment on the book’s contents.
