A royal biographer claims that the “absolutely catastrophic” implications of Spare’s attacks on the royal family are being overlooked, and that the book could “mark the beginning of the end” for the monarchy.

The book has highlighted personality clashes and the “royal publicity machine,” according to Catherine Mayer, King Charles’ biographer.

She believed that whether or not the British public supported such a change, it could endanger the constitutional monarchy.

“This is not just a celebrity knockabout story,” she added.

“What we are talking about is the status of a significant institution of state, with significant powers and significant taxpayer funding, so whether you are pro- or anti-monarchy, it deserves to be considered seriously.”
