Rapper XXXTentacion’s murder suspects are set to go on trial
Three accused are finally set to stand trial, more than four years after gunmen murdered upcoming rapper XXXTentacion during a heist outside a South Florida motorcycle store.
If found guilty of first-degree murder, shooting suspect Michael Boatwright, 28, and his alleged accomplices Dedrick Williams, 26, and Trayvon Newsome, 24, could all be sentenced to life in prison. Additionally, they are accused of armed robbery. They have entered a not-guilty plea.
Robert Allen, a 26-year-old man who admitted to second-degree murder last year, is anticipated to testify against the other three men. Jury selection is scheduled to start on January 18 and should last three weeks. It’s anticipated that the trial will go until March.
Attorneys for the accused have said that other people, including members of the singer’s family and other rappers, had financial and personal reasons for the singer’s murder.
“It’s been over four long years in the making. We are excited to take this first step to bringing Dedrick home,” said Mauricio Padilla, Williams’ attorney. The attorneys for Boatwright and Newsome did not respond to emails seeking comment. The COVID-19 pandemic and legal wrangling delayed the start of the trial.
XXXTentacion, 20, passed away shortly after in the hospital. He was a platinum-selling rising sensation who addressed problems like discrimination and despair in his songs.
His name is pronounced “Ex ex ex ten-ta-see-YAWN.” He received flak for his bad behaviour and several arrests, including allegations that he brutally battered and mistreated his partner.
