With the introduction of Jonathan Majors as Kang the Conqueror after his cameo in Loki and the return of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has kicked off the MCU’s Phase Five with a bang. Nonetheless, the movie also made a point of introducing a number of other fresh faces to the MCU, including Katy O’Brian.

O’Brian is a bit of a sci-fi expert because of his roles in The Mandalorian by Lucasfilm and Quantumania as Jentorra, one of the Freedom Fighters of the Quantum Realm, who appears alongside Quaz and Veb played by William Jackson Harper and David Dastmalchian. She leads the Freedom Fighters as their unfussy, blunt leader as they struggle to overthrow Kang the Conqueror’s tyranny in the Quantum Realm.

O’Brian said in an interview that Jentorra’s storyline originally concentrated far more on her relationship with Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfieffer), who spent years imprisoned in the Quantum Realm and established friends (and foes) there. When Jentorra first hears Janet’s name, it was originally intended to be more obvious that the two women were at odds with one another: “Primarily because in earlier versions it has heavily alluded to that we’d worked together. I felt very betrayed by her, I felt angry towards her and we kind of side-stepped that and made it more about Jentorra and Cassie once the filming started.”

If that animosity had been depicted on screen, O’Brian responded that the movie would have focused more on Janet’s redemption story rather than developing her bond with Cassie and teaching her “the difficulty of what it actually means to be a hero.”
