Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has begun with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The new movie has major ramifications for the franchise moving forward with the introduction of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) and the customary mid- and post-credit scene that leans even more into the universe that will be at the center of the Phase.

The writer of the newest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Jeff Loveness, in an interview talked about all things Ant-Man, including the conclusion and any suspected alterations that were made before the movie’s release. Loveness offered his viewpoint and described the procedure used to choose the conclusion that the new movie’s theatrical release eventually had.

Jeff was asked whether the stories about the altered ending were real, and if so, what caused it and how did it differ from the previous endings. While various conclusions were proposed, Loveness claimed it was a matter of determining what would stick: “We had gamed out and you’re pitching out, you know, in your head as the writer, all the ways it can go. Certainly, you go through all these different scenarios. Yeah, I’ve seen the same. You know, there’s leaks and there’s rumors. But I think, I don’t know, I’m an old-school comic book guy myself, and we’re kind of like sports radio fans, you know? Everyone just kind of throws stuff out and has ideas.”

Loveness continued by talking about a couple of the other suggestions that were made, such as Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang getting caught in the Quantum Realm once more: “I see the merit of it. I certainly did and we gamed that out as well and we talked about it and all that, but at the end of the day, it is quite literally what happens at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp. It’s him trapped in the Quantum Realm again, and I don’t think that would have been satisfying either. And also, it is exactly how he gets out in Endgame. I think the repetition is not solid there.”

He also makes a comment about how some fans wanted to see Kang the Conqueror kill Lang, but he claims that it would have been more intriguing to see Kang’s downfall.
