Govinda recalls that due to Sunita’s age, he was hesitant to date her

Govinda and his wife Sunita Ahuja recently discussed their courtship and first encounter in an interview. They claimed Sunita was the one who struck first after being challenged by a relative of hers who was also linked to the star to impress Govinda. When they started dating, she claimed it took her more than a year of wooing. Govinda recounted their initial meeting and admitted he was hesitant to date her because she was barely 15 at the time.

Govinda responded, “Itni zyada yeh choti thi aur modern thi toh main darr raha tha ki aaj ki tareekh mein iss age mein log pyar karne lageinge toh kahenge kid molestor,” when asked if he could recall the first time he saw Sunita. I was 21 and she was 15. The hum log is toh bahut chote. Aap bahut choti hai, pata hai ki kya keh rahi ho? Toh maine kaha “Haan mujhe sab pata hai aur main chah rahi hoon ki… I love you,” she said. She was really young and contemporary. Mujhe aisa laga yeh bahut choti hai yaar, yeh kya keh rahi hai. Because I dated her, I was afraid of being accused of child molesting. Both of us were young.

The two of them first began dancing together at a movie’s mahurat, and Govinda described how they always did so at weddings and other events. Govinda recalled the first time they touched hands as they drove away from an event together. “Gadi chal rahi hai, aur inka haath mere haath pe touch ho gaya,” he added. Yeh haath hata hi nahi rahi hai, Phir mujhe mehsoos hua. Ab iska haath main chhudwata toh bahut ajeeb lagta, maine kaha “hi,” phir isne pakad liya haath. Haath pakad liya hai toh chalo pakad hi lete hain, Maine socha Punjabi aadmi hoon. We (Sunita claimed “touched each other”) had our first romantic encounter at that point. Initially, Usi Gaadi Mein Hum logo ne pyar ka izhaar kiya (The car was moving, and our hands touched each others’ by mistake. But then she did not remove her hand, and held my hand. I too held her hand for the first time. We expressed our feelings towards each other in the same car)…”

At a movie’s mahurat, the two of them first started dancing together, and Govinda recalled how they often did so at weddings and other occasions.
