Ke Huy Quan says Child Actor to Oscar Nominee is emotional journey
Ke Huy Quan Everything Everywhere All at Once actor extols the virtues of his nomination at the upcoming 95th ceremony, nearly four decades after his debut on the big screen as a child actor in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and he talks about why it “means a lot” to him at this point in his career. I adore [Steven Spielberg, director of Temple of Doom and executive producer/story writer of The Goonies] so much, declares Quan. When I was a young child, “this man transformed my life; he gave me not one, but two excellent movies.”
The Fabelmans, a semi-autobiographical film directed by the 76-year-old Quan, is praised by Quan. “And for us to be recognized this year at the same time his movie is also being recognized — which is a great movie, by the way — it just made this entire award season so much more meaningful,” Quan continues.
Quan continues, “That was such a great and unique experience for me to be able to [see] him directly in his eyes and thank him for giving me my first opportunity after, I think, 10, 12 years now, in person at the Golden Globes. As Quan has dominated the awards season thus far, he is currently the favourite to win the Best Supporting Actor prize later this month.
He received a SAG Award last weekend for his depiction of Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once, which recognized him for his best performance by a male actor in a supporting role. He also took home awards at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes earlier this year. Quan reflects on the achievement and tells people, “There are so many Asian performers up for major acting awards. It means that our tales from the past year are being told, which makes me quite happy.”
