Saurabh Shukla recalls how Jolly LLB rekindled his love for acting
Jolly LLB (2013) is a special movie for actor Saurabh Shukla because it got him back into acting. He wasn’t receiving decent enough roles even after films like Bandit Queen (1994), Satya (1998), and others. “I went through a period in my career where people would compliment my acting skills but wouldn’t cast me in substantial roles. And for that reason, I made the decision to stick with writing rather than pursue an acting career,” he recalls.
Then, however, Barfi (2012) and Jolly LLB occurred, which altered the path of his professional life. He continues, “When Subhash (Kapoor, the director) gave me the Jolly script and offered me the character of a judge, my face sunk because I assumed the role wouldn’t be that significant. Nevertheless, after hearing the narration, I altered my mind because the screenplay did not portray the judge as a stereotype. Koi aur nahi karega yeh part, I said him. You won’t visit another actor. Everyone enjoyed the movie and my role, and because of how much fun I had during filming, I won a national award. I rekindled my interest in acting in this way.
Shukla acknowledges that accolades are “encouraging though validation is a poor term” but he says “the high of performing on set is incomparable” as he reflects on winning the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the movie. “When you win an award, it makes you feel amazing because it validates your decisions and beliefs. Having said that, the reality is that there is no greater adrenaline rush than when executing a scene. The true deal is that. In addition, I adored how the movie didn’t end on a depressing note. That inspired them and gave them hope, he ends.
