Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker David Bradbury’s Arrest in India Sparks Controversy
Australian documentary filmmaker David Bradbury, known for his Oscar-nominated work, was recently detained at Chennai airport alongside his two children before being deported back to Australia. Bradbury, 73, had arrived in India on September 10 with his children Nakeita (21) and Omar (14), intending to visit Varanasi to show them “how Hindus deal with death” following the passing of his wife Treena five months ago.
However, upon arrival, Bradbury was detained for 24 hours in a room he described as “pretty disgusting, with papers and rubbish on the floor under a bed with a filthy mattress and no sheets.” In an interview with The News Minute, Bradbury recalled his discomfort, stating, “I was allowed to go to the toilet up the corridor, but there was one time when, despite my calling out, they didn’t come back to let me out.” Forced to improvise, he added, “I was obliged to relieve my bladder into a paper cup I found on the floor.”
The filmmaker said his two children were forced to travel separately, and he was denied contact with the Australian High Commission. While no official reason has been provided for the detention, Bradbury believes it is linked to his 2012 documentary on the protests against the Kudankulam nuclear plant.
