Liam Payne was reportedly dropped by his music label, Universal, just one day before his tragic death on October 16.
Sources indicate that the decision stemmed from concerns that the music he wanted to create would not resonate with his One Direction fan base. Payne fell from the third-floor balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
A source told Mail Online, “Liam wanted to make the sort of music he enjoyed but his label believed it wouldn’t win over 1D fans, so there were disagreements about the way his brand should have been marketed.” Budget cuts at Universal also contributed to their decision, as they aimed to invest in other promising artists.
The source added, “Unfortunately, part of the decision was motivated by all of the memes and jokes people made about him online. His team saw that as a sign to jump ship.” Payne faced backlash on social media for a clip of him dancing at Niall Horan’s concert, with many labeling his behavior as “cringe” and “embarrassing.”
Universal released a tribute following his passing, stating, “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Liam Payne. His legacy will live on through his music and the countless fans he inspired.” Payne’s publicist also dropped him earlier this month, leaving him without representation.
