Ajay Devgn calls for transparency in box office business
The ongoing debate over rigged box office figures and inflated collections in Bollywood has gained traction, with actor Ajay Devgn lending his voice to the cause.
Speaking at the Pinkvilla Masterclass, Ajay emphasized the need for greater transparency in the box office business, especially in light of calls for a system like China’s, where collection data is updated hourly.
“It is required and slowly, I think it is getting there. I guess it is getting there. So, in a couple of years, everything is going to be transparent. It’s already getting transparent,” Ajay said, highlighting the slow but steady progress toward clearer data on ticket prices, age demographics, and more. Filmmaker Rohit Shetty, who has worked closely with Ajay on the Singham franchise, also supported the call for transparency.
Ajay also expressed concern about the shift in the industry’s focus. “Filmmakers talk about numbers more than the script. First, there was only passion. Now the numbers have come in. And it hurts,” he said, reflecting on how the industry has become more driven by box office performance than creative passion.
Ajay Devgn’s Singham Again, the latest installment in the popular franchise, has been a box office hit, grossing over ₹250 crore since its release on November 1. He also has several upcoming projects, including Azaad, Raid 2, and Son of Sardar 2.
