Matty Healy apologizes publicly following physical violence threat to rapper Azealia Banks

Matty Healy’s ongoing feud with rapper Azealia Banks took a dramatic turn this week after the 1975 frontman threatened to “slap” Banks in response to her criticism of Charli XCX.

The clash began when Banks made a negative comment about Charli’s appearance on X, calling her “soooo pretty. Ugh” in reference to an old music video clip. Banks’ post sparked backlash, with many social media users defending Charli.

Healy, who is close to Charli and engaged to bandmate George Daniel’s fiancée, Gabbriette Bechtel, fired back at Banks. “Azealia you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to your ‘reads’. All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people,” Healy wrote. He added, “I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro.”

Things escalated when Banks targeted Healy’s fiancée, calling her “Frankenstein” and saying, “You both look like you share needles.” In response, Healy angrily tweeted, “Talk to me like that I’m not gonna side eye you… I’ll f–king slap you.” Realizing his mistake, Healy quickly apologized: “Nah I can’t be saying I’m gonna hit a girl that’s insane I’m sorry.”

Banks, however, wasn’t receptive to the apology, instead calling out Healy’s past controversies and hinting at legal action, saying, “What type of pu*** a* ni** goes online and incriminates himself this way?” She also reminded Healy of his previous comments regarding women of color. The feud between the two has been simmering since May 2023, when Banks advised Taylor Swift against dating Healy, calling him unworthy of her reputation.
