Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has been sentenced to three months in jail in a cheque bounce case filed against him in 2018. According to Indian media reports, the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for the renowned filmmaker after the case was heard for nearly seven years.

The court found Varma guilty of issuing a bounced cheque due to insufficient funds and ordered him to pay INR 375,000 as compensation to the complainant. Failure to comply with the payment will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.

The case was filed by a company named Shree in 2018. Although the ‘Satya’ director secured bail in 2022 by submitting an INR 5,000 bond, he has now been convicted. Reports indicate that Varma was not present at the court hearing.

Following the court’s decision, Ram Gopal Varma addressed the situation on X, stating, “With regard to the news about me and Andheri court, I want to clarify that it is to do with a 7-year-old case of ₹2 lakh 38 thousand amount, relating to my ex-employee. My advocates are attending to it, and since the matter is in court, I cannot say anything further.”

On the professional front, Varma’s latest directorial venture was 2024’s ‘Vyuham,’ based on the death of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Additionally, he has announced his upcoming project titled ‘Syndicate.’

Discussing his new film, Varma posted on X, “The film is called SYNDICATE. It’s about a terrifying organisation which threatens the very EXISTENCE of INDIA. SYNDICATE will be a very SCARY FILM not due to any supernatural elements, but because it will SCARILY expose what HORRORS HUMAN BEINGS CAN DO.”
