Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 makes history, becomes highest-grossing film in China
The Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 has made history by becoming the highest-grossing film in China, surpassing previous box office records.
Based on the legendary mythological character, the film has earned over 8 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) during the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, according to ticket sales tracker Maoyan. This achievement puts it ahead of The Battle of Lake Changjin (2021), which grossed around $900 million.
The success of Ne Zha 2 is seen as a breakthrough for China’s domestic film industry, which has long been overshadowed by Hollywood productions. The film is now set for international release in the United States, Canada, and Australia, marking a significant step toward global recognition. A review on IMDb praised the movie, stating, “It not only showcases the strong power of Chinese animation after its rise, but also demonstrates the infinite possibilities of traditional Chinese mythology in the modern context.”
With some fans hopeful that the film could challenge Avatar (2009) as the world’s highest-grossing movie, one Weibo user urged the diaspora to support its release, writing, “Now it’s over to the Chinese people overseas to chip in.”
Building on the success of 2019’s Ne Zha, the film’s strong performance highlights China’s growing influence in the animation industry.
