The actress who played Mehrunisa in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, Aditi Rao Hyadri, has nothing but respect for the director’s perspective and his understanding of women. 2018 saw the release of the film Padmaavat, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Aditi. The crowd praised Aditi’s elegant portrayal of Mehrunisa.

The first trailer for Heeramandi, which is helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, featuring Aditi Rao Hyadri, was only released a few days ago! Aditi now talked openly about her time working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in an interview with Pinkvilla, and she gave him credit for developing admirable characters in his movies.

When asked about the portrayal of women in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movies and her part in Padmaavat, Aditi Rao Hyadri responded, “I really think a lot of it stems also from Sanjay sir and his vision and his understanding of women. The layers that he brings into this girl in that time, in the position that she is in, he doesn’t make her just a cardboard cut-out.”

She continued by saying that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s characters have a tonne of depth. “There’s a lot of layers that he delves into. Maybe it’s not spoken of as a dialogue, but there is so much subtext that he gives you when he talks to you as an actor or when he is talking about the character. We talk about heroines, but heroines are also people. They are not just pretty cardboard cut-outs. It’s not just about how they look, there’s so much heart and soul that goes into creating that character. It’s really about directors who want to bring that out in their heroines and the women they write for. I would give all the credit to the director. Even Mehrunisa, for thinking of a part like that, for creating her and for pushing an actor into creating a very wholesome girl,” said Aditi.

Even though she didn’t get the most screen time in Padmaavat, Aditi Rao Hyadri claimed that the part was satisfying.  “In Padmavat, of the four principles, mine was actually the smallest in terms of screen time but it was so fulfilling for me to do. A heroine is not a heroine for the time she spends on the camera. A heroine is a heroine for the life that she lives and the way that she impacts people who watch her,” she said.
