Hansal Mehta replies to the film trade analyst
Anubhav Sinha’s upcoming movie, Bheed, was criticised by cinema trade analyst Sumit Kadel, so Hansal Mehta responded to him on Twitter. The movie connects the worker movement during the 2020 shutdown to the 1947 Partition and focuses on classism. Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar appear in it.
“Thus #Bheed connects Covid Lockdown in India with Partition of India in 1947,” tweeted Sumit Kadel after the makers of Bheed released a teaser video. Really RIDICULOUS. I’m curious as to why our esteemed production company and actors participate in #AnubhavSinha’s personal propaganda that denigrates the business. .” “Because of such attempts, entire industry face wrath of common public… This provides wings to boycott & cancel culture. Sorry I don’t support this,” he continued.
Hansal quickly expressed support for the movie when he shared it. “So you’ve seen the film I suppose.” “You have right to show the plight of migrants during lockdown but u can’t compare the pandemic with India Pak partition which happened on religion line. #AnubhavSinha is putting India in bad light through #Bheed & no nationalist with any political ideology should support this,” the film industry analyst wrote in another post.
“Let’s hear the political ideology you espouse in your tweet sir. Mine supports free speech and expression. My ideology supports inclusivity and is one that is open to criticism and debate,” wrote back Hansal Mehta once again.
The first glimpse of Bheed is of the early Covid-19 shutdown in 2020, when migrant labourers from many countries had to return to their settlements. While some people had access to food and money, others could not walk. This month’s end will see the release of the movie.
Rajkummar Rao shared the movie’s first trailer and commented, “Hum kahaani bata rahe hai uss waqt ki jab batwara desh mein nahi, samaaj mein hua tha (We are telling the story of that time where there was a divide not in the country, but in society). #Bheed, a story of the darkest times, in black and white. Releasing in cinemas on 24th March 2023.”
