In a recent interview, Janhvi Kapoor discussed feeling a “strange sense of comfort” following the passing of her mother Sridevi. The oldest child of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor is Janhvi Kapoor. Khushi Kapoor, her younger sister, will shortly make her debut in the business.

Speaking on Sridevi’s passing, Janhvi claimed that after the release of her debut film, she began to look for approval from the public and referred to herself as “stupid.”

On February 24, 2018, Sridevi was discovered dead in a hotel in Dubai. She had travelled to Dubai with her family in order to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Dhadak, Janhvi‘s debut movie in which Ishaan Khatter also starred, was released in theatres about six months later.

When asked about her mother’s passing for Mojo Story, Janhvi told Barkha Dutt, “Of course, there was this terrible sorrow, and there was a hole in my heart. But, I had this awful sensation that “something bad has happened” to justify all the wonderful things that had happened to me, as well as all the advantages and possessions that I had acquired effortlessly, which I had heard my entire life. I said to myself,‘Ok now something bad has happened. I deserve this. I deserve this horrible thing that has happened to me. It was a weird sense of relief.’

Janhvi continued by describing how she threw herself into her profession to deal with the loss of Sridevi. As Janhvi was made to do things she didn’t have to at the time, she reflected,  “During COVID I was forced to spend a minute with myself, and thoughts, and I realised actually how damaged I was,”

“Another aspect of it that I reflected on, that I think really messed me up was the validation and approval that I sought from my mother. I gave the audience that responsibility,”  she continued.

“Not everyone in the world is going to love you like your mother. So, when my first film came out I was like ‘I will get the audience’s love through mom and it will be her.’ That was stupid of me, because a, it was my first film, and b, with the baggage of privileges with me, not everyone is out to love you. And, I could have done a better job also,” Janhvi added.

The fifth anniversary of Sridevi’s passing was last month. She uploaded a picture to Instagram with the statement,  “I still look for you everywhere mumma, still do everything I do hoping I’m making you proud. Everywhere I go, and everything I do- it starts and ends with you.”  The following year, Janhvi will appear in Bawaal with Varun Dhawal and Mr. & Mrs. Mahi with Rajkummar Rao.
