Johnny Lever talks about ‘Cirkus’ failure and some mistakes

Johnny Lever makes his OTT debut. The veteran initially began performing stand-up comedy with the comedic series Pop Kaun on Disney+ Hotstar on Friday. He has worked in the film and television industries over the course of his four-decade career.

He made appearances in the commercially unsuccessful family comedy Cirkus and the Gujarati comedy Jaysuk Zdpayo last year. The comic talked about how people didn’t like his comedy.

Cirkus, based on The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, starred Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma in separate parts. Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, Murali Sharma, Sanjay Mishra, Ashwini Kalsekar, Siddharth Jadhav, Vrajesh Hirjee, Tiku Talsania, Brijendra Kala, and Sulabha Arya were among the several ensemble cast members.

The movie failed to engage audiences, even though it had several comedy veterans and Rohit Shetty regulars.

The seasoned comedian discussed the film’s bad performance in an interview “Every director thinks well about the film, nobody wants to do nuksaan (loss) because they invest heavily in the film — money wise and emotion wise, a lot of effort goes into making films. In Cirkus, humne jo kaam ki, humaare part ki taarif huiee (whatever work we did was appreciated).”

He added, “There could have been some mistakes in the film in totality that people didn’t like because of which the film didn’t work. What can one do about that? But one thing I know for sure that people look forward to comedy, people expect it from us all the time.”

Although Johnny has worked on more than 300 Hindi films, in recent years he has only been seen in one or two a year. For the roles he played in Deewana Mastana (1997) and Dulhe Raja, he twice received the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role (1998). In that category, the veteran received 13 nominations.

His son Jessy and daughter Jamie have also followed their father into the entertainment business.

The father-daughter team previously collaborated on the 2019 comedy Housefull 2, and they are currently seen in the movie Pop Kaun with Kunal Kemmu, Nupur Sanon, Saurabh Shukla, Chunky Panday, and Rajpal Yadav.
