Director Simon McQuoid returns in his role for Mortal Kombat sequel
For the live-action sequel to “Mortal Kombat,” Australian director Simon McQuoid has been chosen by New Line Cinema.
Jeremy Slater wrote the sequel’s script. And McQuoid, who made his feature directorial debut with the 2021 film version of the popular combat video game franchise, will helm it.
After the 1995 original film and its 1997 follow-up, “Annihilation,” the sequel will be the fourth overall film in the “Mortal Kombat” film franchise.
Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an original character in the franchise, was the subject of the 2021 film. Which was a relaunch of the movie series.
Young, a retired mixed martial artist, gets lured into the world of “Mortal Kombat,” a series of competitions between champions of the Earthrealm and the anarchic Outworld, when he finds himself the target of the assassin Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim).
Although there was no official Mortal Kombat tournament in the movie, there was a hint for one in the sequel. Characters from the video games, in addition to Sub-Zero. That were showcased included Sonya Blade, Kano, Jax Briggs, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Scorpion.
