Kevin Smith overcomes the Hill when he was younger
The 52-year-old director of Clerks III posted a sweaty selfie of himself ascending a tough hill in Red Bank, New Jersey, as he thought back on the nearly five years since his severe heart attack and the approximately 100 pounds he has lost.
He captioned the photo, “On Thursday, I ran up a hill in my hometown that I had never run up when I was a youngster while weighing my adult lowest of 195. “I am aware that some people are asking you to quit talking about your heart attack already. If I do, I could end up becoming even more complacent.
“So with apologies to those who hear me as a broken record, I’ll continue to remind myself that I was lucky enough to survive the deadliest heart attack there is and I’m living on borrowed time. And so maybe use this post as a polite reminder, Kids: Pretty Please, with sugar on it… Get your f—ing heart checked,” Smith added.
He also posted a cute selfie with his mother Grace, who made her cinematic debut in her son’s 1994 film debut Clerks, and also starred in the 2006 and 2022 sequels as well as the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
Since having a severe heart attack in February 2018, Smith has been open about his fitness and health journey on social media, saying at the time that he “would’ve died” if he hadn’t gone to the hospital.
The inventor of the View Askewniverse said to the news last month: “The best present I’ve ever received was that heart attack. It not only saved my life, and inspired me to become vegan and healthier, but it also gave me the backbone to act in Clerks III.”
“And because of that, it winds up being this personal journey in a way that no Clerks movie should be … The guy who started making these movies couldn’t have predicted this,” Smith added.
In the movie, which starts with one of the protagonists having a heart attack, Smith also ruminated on coming to terms with his own mortality. The first Clerks was inspired by Smith’s early 20s, Clerks II was inspired by his 30s, and Clerks III is inspired by Smith’s 40s and beyond.
“That includes the conclusion, without a doubt. When you reach my age, you begin to reflect, “Wow. Mathematically speaking, there must be less time behind me than in front of me “Smith at the time said. And I can still clearly recall working at the store and having endless time to plan and daydream.
Along with nationwide screenings for Smith’s Convenience Tour, Clerks III is currently available for digital streaming.
