Maria Caballero, who is the inspiration for “Mama Coco,”
The person who is thought to have served as the model for Mama Coco in the Disney Pixar film Coco, Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, has passed away.
In Santa Fe de la Laguna, where she was also born, Caballero passed away.
Roberto Monroy, the Michoacan state tourism secretary in Mexico, tweeted about Caballero’s passing.
“I deeply regret the death of Dona Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, ‘Mama Coco,’ a tireless woman and example of life,” Monroy wrote, “who was the inspiration for this beloved character who went around the world.”
The 2017 animated film tells the tale of 12-year-old Miguel, who plays his great-great-guitar grandfather and finds himself in the ethereal and vibrant Land of the Dead, where he meets him. Mama Coco, played by actress Ana Ofelia Murguia, is Miguel’s great-grandmother. Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Edward James Olmos, Anthony Gonzalez, and Alanna Ubach all provided voices in the movie in addition to Murguia.
Disney has never formally acknowledged that Caballero was the model for the matriarch in the film, although they have stated that they spoke with many local families, including Caballero’s, while filming.
