The New Jersey native quickly earned people’s trust as registered nurses by donning scrubs and entering a hospital.

It didn’t matter that by 2003, Cullen had been the target of numerous complaints and disciplinary actions, been the target of four police investigations, spent time in a mental hospital, and had been fired or asked to resign by five hospitals, all of which had paid him over the course of his 16-year employment. He showed up for work with a technically clean record, and he obediently signed up for weekends, holidays, and other unpopular shifts to make a great first impression everywhere he went.

That way, he may practice his genuine trade while fewer people are observing.

Seven years into several life sentences for killing scores of patients while working as a nurse, Cullen told 60 Minutes’ Steve Kroft, “I thought that people aren’t suffering anymore, so in a sense, I thought I was helping.”

In exchange for prosecutors not seeking the death penalty, he admitted to committing killings in two other states, but investigators believe his actual victim count may number in the hundreds.

And he stated to Kroft, “I don’t know whether I would’ve stopped” if he hadn’t been discovered.

The Good Nurse, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and is currently available to stream on Netflix, stars Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain as Cullen and Amy Loughren, a close friend and professional who assisted the police in wrapping up their investigation.

The real Loughren met with the two actors to assist them to understand what it was like for her to learn that Cullen was leading a double life. The single mother of two girls had significant heart problems that she didn’t disclose at work, but she confided in Cullen.

“She describes it as dissociative, and so even though I’d read all about his background and his upbringing, which is woven with trauma,” Redmayne told AV Club, “hearing this person that was so close to him [explain that Cullen] was two different people was an insight.”

Loughren admitted that she was first hesitant to get involved because she didn’t want it to appear that she was making money in any way from the case.

I eventually realized it would give me a platform to explain myself and also provide a voice to others who have loved dark individuals or have loved those with terrible mental illness that lead to dark crimes, she said in an interview with Glamour UK.
