After the turbulent few weeks following the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs and co-chairmen of DC Studios, just when it seemed we couldn’t get any more dramatic news from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, another potential quagmire has emerged, and this time it involves a movie that hasn’t yet been cancelled.

Where does Henry Cavill stand in a segment looking at DC’s future under its new leadership? Will Robert Pattinson continue to portray R-Batz? Will Michael Keaton ever genuinely recognise himself as Bruce Wayne on-screen again? — Concerns have been raised about the impending Aquaman sequel, which will include Jason Momoa as the main character, according to Variety.

On December 25, 2023, the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled for release. However, insiders have told Variety that Pam Abdy, the co-president of Warner Bros., met with Aquaman director James Wan to break some bad news before Gunn and Safran took up their new positions. Reshoots had to be significantly pared back before release due to the sequel’s rising expenses, which had risen to nearly $200 million, adding pressure to the director and the production as a whole. The studio simply isn’t willing to spend millions of dollars on more modifications to the film in its current form.

Gunn and Safran appear content to start over after a ten-year plan (which felt compressed into around five movies) to try and fast-track the DC Extended Universe into a place akin to Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe. The only remaining feature film on the DC slate is The Lost Kingdom, along with The Flash.

Gunn is a fan of Momoa, who made a cameo appearance alongside John Cena as Arthur Curry on Gunn’s HBO movie Peacemaker. This is one thing that works in Aquaman’s favour. Momoa just struck a deal with Warner Bros. to star with Cena in the action comedy Killer Vacation, on which Gunn’s coworker Safran is serving as producer.

When it was released in 2018, Aquaman was somewhat of an unexpected success for DC and Warner Bros. Despite having a sizable budget, estimated to be between $160 million and $200 million, it exceeded expectations and earned $1.148 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing DCEU film and the highest-grossing film based on a DC character, surpassing even Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. Momoa was singled out for praise and the film received positive reviews.

At least moviegoers may comfort themselves with the knowledge that they’ll see Momoa at least one more time as the King of Atlantis on the big screen, even though Aquaman’s future beyond The Lost Kingdom is currently in doubt.

On December 25, 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom debuts in theatres.
