Avatar: The Way of Water had raked in $609.7 million at the international box office, demonstrating how popular James Cameron’s return to Pandora has become. The movie has made $183 million domestically and $426.8 million internationally as of this writing.

With a total of $14.3 million, the film currently holds the second-largest Wednesday of the year, falling short of Top Gun: Maverick’s $14.8 million. Its current daily box office total points to a solid domestic run that will see additional growth throughout the holidays. It remains to be seen if it can surpass Maverick’s $719 million domestic haul. The movie’s domestic performance will, however, become more obvious in the coming weeks.

The movie continues to have widespread popularity abroad, with China continuing to be its greatest market and bringing in an additional $70.5 million despite significant COVID outbreaks, while France’s contribution brought in an additional $37 million. Along with $26.5 million in ticket sales from India and $26.1 million from Germany, the movie is also gaining a lot of interest in Korea with $32.1 million. The movie is now ranked behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder as the fifth-highest-grossing Hollywood movie abroad in 2022.

The sequel is expected to dominate the box office despite approaching competition during the holiday season with the releases of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Babylon, and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. According to previous reports, the movie is expected to experience a domestic 40% to 50% drop on its second weekend. The first Avatar is notable for having excellent box office traction in 2009, with only a 1.8% decline occurring during its second weekend. The holidays will certainly provide the sequel plenty of breathing room at the box office, even though it is unlikely to match the longevity of its predecessor. Nonetheless, it will probably play out reasonably strongly for the next few weeks.

Avatar: The Way of Water, which is set more than ten years after the events of the first movie, reunites James Cameron with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang in their original roles as Jake Sully, Neytiri, and Colonel Miles Quaritch. Along with several new cast members, including Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and Edie Falco, Sigourney Weaver returns in a new role.
