Ellen Pompeo Shows Off Malibu Dream Home
- Having “manifested” acquiring her dream home, Ellen Pompeo is displaying it.
- In order to spend more time at her Malibu, California, home, which she shares with her husband Chris Ivery and their three children—daughters Stella Luna and Sienna May, and son Eli Christopher—Pompeo scaled back her role as Meredith Grey on ABC’s popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.
- In an interview for its January 2023 cover story, she tells Architectural Digest, “I am beginning a very exciting chapter of my life, if I do say so myself.” In March, I’ll begin work on a new Hulu series, but for now, I’m really free.
Since purchasing the contemporary home from Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman almost ten years ago, Pompeo and Ivery have named it their home. The actress and the athleisure apparel CEO initially stayed there on the weekends. It was built by midcentury-inspired architects Conrad Buff and Donald Hensman.
Pompeo tells the source, “I like to say I manifested this house,” when reflecting on how the mansion came to be her home.
Pompeo claims she first saw the house while it was up for sale years ago, but at the time, she “couldn’t afford” to buy it. However, she adds, “I didn’t tell anyone that.”
She had long liked it, and in 2013, when it was finally put back on the market, she acquired it.
After repairs, the house has 3,000 square feet of living area and a front and middle courtyard. It also has views of the Pacific Ocean.
The mansion was modernised, but celebrity favourite interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, whom Pompeo refers to as her “partner in crime,” notes that they were determined to preserve the house’s individuality.
He admitted that it needed updating but stated, “We didn’t affect its flow or footprint.”
Following their modifications, the home’s exterior now has teak panels and black metal windows and doors that appear to vanish when opened. Bullard claims he replaced the original terrazzo floors with solid concrete because they were “too slippery.”
Pompeo also discusses her personal decorating philosophy in the interview, saying that “some people want a sterile home that makes them feel like they’re at a spa. But I adore artwork that conveys a narrative.
She envisioned the interior design as having a luxurious, 1970s feel. She makes fun of the idea by saying, “Big Lincoln Continentals, giant fur jackets, thigh-high boots.”
She claims that the de Sede sofa in the living room served as the house’s starting point. A cutting table from Yves Saint Laurent’s studio is nearby. Pompeo acknowledges Diana Ross and Grace Jones in the entryway with pictures of the icons.
The living room, dining room, and master suite are all lined with black Agatha marble imported from Brazil.
Pompeo describes the pattern as “the book match marble,” which makes use of a split piece of stone that is installed end to end to produce a mirror image of the pattern. It is very dramatic and perfectly sets the tone for everything. It truly is a work of art.
As Pompeo and Ivery recently acquired the home next door, the family’s footprint will soon grow.
It will provide Ellen with a genuine Malibu estate, boasts Bullard.
