Taylor Hawkins will always hold a special place in the hearts of the Foo Fighters and their music. A special New Year’s Eve statement was posted on Instagram by the rock band, fronted by Dave Grohl, nine months after their drummer’s shocking death at age 50. The group is looking forward to continuing their work in the future while paying tribute to their late bandmate’s legacy while reflecting on the “most difficult and painful year that our band has ever known.”

“Without Taylor, we would never have become the band that we were,” they said, “and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.”

The post went on: “We also know that Taylor valued his fans just as much as they valued him. And we are confident that he will be there in spirit every night with the rest of us when we meet you again, which we will do shortly.”

In 1994, Grohl, a fellow drummer who had left his previous band Nirvana after Kurt Cobain’s tragic death, started the Foo Fighters in Seattle. Hawkins joined the Foo Fighters in 1997 after playing drums on tour with Alanis Morissette.

“Foo Fighters were formed 27 years ago to represent the healing power of music and a continuation of life,” the group said in their statement. “And for the past 27 years, our fans have built a worldwide community, a devoted support system that has helped us all get through the darkest of times together. A place to share our joy and our pain, our hopes and fears, and to join in a chorus of life together through music.”

On March 20, Hawkins gave his final performance, sharing the stage with Foo Fighters at Lollapalooza Argentina. Hours before the band was scheduled to perform, he was discovered dead in a hotel room in Colombia five days later. He had drugs in his system, according to toxicology data, the Colombian Attorney General’s Office later reported, but it did not specify what killed him. The situation is still being looked into.

Following Hawkins’ passing, Foo Fighters canceled the remainder of the scheduled 2022 tour dates. The band has not yet revealed any new live performances. The band played live for the first time without the drummer in September, serving as the headlining act at two glitzy benefit events, one of which was held in London. Oliver Shane Hawkins, his 16-year-old son, performed “My Hero” on stage with the group as a guest drummer in honor of his father.
