Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is supposedly in danger
Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed, protracted sci-fi epic Megalopolis is in grave danger as the production is reportedly in “chaos,” according to the journal.
The production designer and supervising art director, in addition to losing the whole visual effects crew at the start of December, were among the key creative personnel lost by the film, which has been filming in Atlanta since October.
Prior to costs spiraling out of control and forcing the production to switch back to traditional green screen technology, it was reported that Coppola intended to use virtual production technology similar to that used on The Mandalorian, a real-time generating CGI projection background known as The Volume within Disney.
For what has been Coppola’s lifelong passion project, the director assembled a sizable ensemble A-list cast that included Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, Talia Shire, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman.
The director is paying for the movie solely on his own dime, using the tiny fortune he amassed from selling his wildly successful wineries in Northern California. Although the movie is halfway through production, these problems have caused the $120 million budget to increase, and the journal adds that it is uncertain whether the project can truly wrap up.
In this epic tale of political ambition, creativity, and risky love, the fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to overcome its own societal issues, according to the movie’s confusing summary. The movie’s plot is thought to center on an architect who wants to recreate New York City as a future utopia in the wake of a catastrophic catastrophe.
Coppola is accustomed to working on challenging productions for his epic movies; for example, the 1970s shoot for his 1979 masterpiece Apocalypse Now was plagued by problems, which he described as being “[In] the forest. We had too much money and equipment at our disposal, and we gradually became nuts.
When asked by Deadline earlier this year if he had any concerns about funding the production, Coppola responded with confidence. What could possibly go wrong for me? I’ll pass away poor and in debt. I won’t be impoverished, “said he.
