Glen Powell hasn’t written a Captain Planet film in five years, but the Top Gun: Maverick actor is still dedicated to achieving pollution oblivion. For Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions, Powell plans to write and appear in the eco-hero film. Powell, who spoke to Entertainment Tonight, acknowledged that the project, which was first announced in 2018, is still being worked on by Warner Bros., but he added that he needs to see “where all the superhero stuff kind of lands there” in reference to the studio’s current restructuring of its DC Comics offerings.

Powell continued, “I am aware of DiCaprio’s intense affection for it. I have a strong passion for it. I think it might be fantastic… I hope that one succeeds. I would like playing that superhero.” Given the ecological theme of the series, it comes as no surprise that DiCaprio, who is well-known for being vocal about environmental issues, is involved in its creation.

Ted Turner, a media magnate, and environmentalist created the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which made its debut in 1990 on TBS and in syndication. The Planeteers, a global team of teenagers assembled and empowered by Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, were the focus of the program. They battled a colorful ensemble of voracious environment-destroying enemies, from mad scientists to rat mutants to space aliens, by using the elemental powers of wind, water, earth, fire, and heart. The Planeteers could pool their abilities to summon Captain Planet, a blue-skinned, wisecracking superhero whose tremendous powers always routed evil before the credits rolled when their enemies proved to be too overpowering (often towards the end of the episode).

Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, Martin Sheen, Jeff Goldblum, and LeVar Burton were among the show’s original voice actors; it ran for six seasons, from 1990 to 1996, producing 113 episodes.

With parts in Scream Queens, Everybody Wants Some!, and Set It Up, Powell’s career has been steadily growing, but his iconic performance as Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin in this summer’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick has propelled him to breakaway stardom. He co-starred in the Korean War drama Devotion with another 2022 breakout star Jonathan Majors last year, and he will next be seen in the action comedy Hitman directed by Richard Linklater.
