James Wan is one of the pioneers of contemporary horror thanks to his work on films like Malignant in 2021 and the cult classic Insidious, which will get its fifth iteration in 2023. Wan sat down with an interviewer on the press tour for M3GAN, his upcoming collaboration with Jason Blum, to discuss the killer doll as well as his other upcoming projects.

Back in November, while Wan and Blum were finalizing their agreement, Wax understandably seized the chance to inquire about their new venture and any intellectual property Blum may have that Wan could be interested in utilizing for upcoming projects. Wan was excited to be able to explore a vast array of IPs as part of their new agreement, despite having to keep their future collaboration’s specifics very quiet. As he stated:

“Well, it’s obviously very early on, and there’s not a lot I can really speak to at this moment, but to answer that question, hell yes, of course. Yes. And obviously, not just at Blumhouse, [but] with Universal as well. So that’s about to the extent I would say.”

James Wan is probably 70 to 80 percent of an artist and 30 to 20 percent a businessperson, whereas I am the opposite. Blum and Wan’s creative talents complement each other rather wonderfully, he said when the news of their forthcoming collaboration was first made public. The Halloween reboot trilogy, Mike Flanagan classics like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Hush, the Paranormal Activity franchise, and many more are among the legendary horror films produced by Blumhouse. Blum was keen to downplay his personal role as an innovator.

Blum was a producer on the original insidious film, so this is not Wan and Blum’s first time working together. Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see what these two horror industry titans can do with their combined expertise. It might be time for a fresh take on old monsters like Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon now that the pair are established at Universal. Additionally, Wan would be a welcome addition to any upcoming Happy Death Day sequels.
