Matt Reeves said he will soon meet with James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new co-heads of DC Studios. Fans shouldn’t worry, Reeves assures us, since his BatVerse will continue to expand concurrently with the new DC Universe.

The Batman, a masterfully written detective tale that centers on Bruce Wayne’s emotional development, was released in theatres last year, and it introduced a groundbreaking vision of Gotham City (Robert Pattinson). Even with the pandemic still having an impact on theatres, the movie was a financial success. Naturally, Warner Bros. requested that Reeves begin developing a sequel and spinoff miniseries.

The Warner Bros. Discovery merger, which occurred a few months after the premiere of The Batman, completely upended the DC World as the firm opted to redesign its superhero cinematic universe. Reeves secured a multi-year contract with Warner Bros. Discovery during the programming cuts, which is said to have protected his BatVerse. We all thought Reeves’ vision for the Dark Knight wouldn’t fit with DC Studios’ 10-year plan for movies, TV series, and even video games when Gunn and Safran were hired to make difficult decisions in the name of a cohesive tale.

We were relieved to learn this week that Reeves is still engaged in production on The Batman sequel. The Penguin, a series starring Colin Farrell that begins production this year, is another project the director plans to add to his BatVerse. But that doesn’t mean Reeves has unrestricted control over his BatVerse; he still needs to meet with Gunn and Safran to discuss his long-term strategy. Reeves explains to us:

“They [Gunn and Safran] have been great. […] We’re actually supposed to meet in the next few weeks because they want to talk to me about the broad plan, and then they want to hear the BatVerse plan. We’re just getting together to talk about all of that. Look, I’m excited to hear what they’re going to do. The BatVerse thing, as James, has said, and as Peter has said, is kind of its own thing they’re letting us do.”

Will DC Studios Approach the BatVerse from an Elseworld Perspective?

As co-presidents of DC Studios, Gunn and Safran’s first task was to integrate each film into a single, well-rounded plot. They’ve already taken contentious choices like canceling Wonder Woman 3 and firing Henry Cavill as Superman because of this. The knowledge that Reeves will be able to continue developing his BatVerse apart from the bigger DC Universe is very exciting.

Gunn and Safran appear to be copying the “Elseworlds” technique of DC Comics by allowing authors to produce stories set in alternate timelines as long as they don’t conflict with the main canon narrative. Reeves informs us that the meeting’s major objectives are to examine his BatVerse, Gunn, and Safran’s 10-year plan, and identify any conflicting narratives. According to the director:

“I had this dream for the way I wanted that to play out and that’s part of what I’m going to be talking to them about in a few weeks. They’re going to be talking to me about what they’re doing in their ten-year plan or certainly what’s in the near future as well so that we can understand that we’re not—it’s air traffic control—we don’t want to be crashing into each other. We want to support each other. I’m super excited. I’m really excited to hear about what they’re doing and to be working with them. It’s going to be cool.”

On January 17, 2023, the stunning new limited-edition Clover field 4K Ultra HD SteelBook will be available. Neither The Batman sequel nor The Penguin series has a release date. Check out our conversation with Reeves from just before The Batman hit theatres for the time being.
