The Cannes Palmed’Or winner Triangle of Sadness and the David Bowie documentary musical Moonage Daydream were among the top movies that producer and distributor NEON released in 2022. Five of NEON’s best movies from last year, including those first two, are now being preserved for future generations of viewers and collectors by being added to The Criterion Collection. Saint Omer, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, and Petite Maman are all included in the list.

Since they partnered together to add Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire to their library in 2019, NEON and Criterion have frequently collaborated. Their most recent collaboration is led by Saint Omer by Alice Diop, which has won awards. The movie, which won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at its Venice debut, is regarded as one of the most notable worldwide productions of the previous year.

It has received numerous honours and nominations, and it is this year’s French entry for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards. In Saint Omer, a court drama, Rama, a young novelist who is expecting, attends the trial of Laurence Coly, a mother who is charged with abandoning her child to die on the beach by being swept away by the waves. She originally intended to use the case to write a literary retelling of a Greek story, but as she watches the trial, she discovers that her fears are heightened and her beliefs are challenged.

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, a documentary by Academy Award winner Laura Poitras, offers something for fans of the genre. Over 65 of the nation’s top reviewers have acclaimed the movie as one of the best of the year, and it received awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the National Society of Film Critics last year. It also received the National Board of Review’s Freedom of Expression award. The most recent film by Poitras takes a close look at the life of activist and photographer Nan Goldin and how she brought down the Sackler family, who founded Purdue Pharma.

Triangle of Sadness, directed by Ruben stlund, was arguably the biggest movie of the lot. It was the focus of the Cannes Film Festival and has a chance to be nominated for Best Picture at the next Academy Awards and BAFTA Awards. It received two nominations for Golden Globes, including one for supporting actress Dolly De Leon, who has received a lot of positive press from critics. The satirical black comedy is set in the aftermath of an ultra-rich cruise ship sinking, leaving a couple of influential fashion models and other passengers stranded on an island.

The final two tracks, Sciamma’s Petite Maman and Brett Morgan’s long-delayed Moonage Daydream, both gained critical acclaim. Five years in the making, Morgan’s most recent documentary gained critical acclaim as one of the best of the year. Among other honors, it also won him the Critics Choice Documentary Award for Best Editing. The movie, which had its world premiere at Cannes, takes viewers on a musical tour of the renowned Bowie’s body of work and features never-before-seen material taken directly from his archives.

In contrast, Sciamma’s follow-up to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Petite Maman, presents an emotional and intimate portrait of the bond between a mother and her daughter. The movie received high marks from American film critics, and the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominated it for Best International Film in 2022.
