The strange donuts in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery are full of holes, and the holes in the donuts are full of holes. The spectator is given a mid-film twist in this newly baked Benoit Blanc story, identical to that of its predecessor, Knives Out.

In the original movie, the audience is introduced to the real killer before the movie even reaches the halfway mark, taking them down a totally different route before returning their attention to the original killing—which turned out not to be a murder at all. In the breezy, island-themed follow-up, filmmaker Rian Johnson chose yet another mid-movie twist involving Janelle Monáe’s character Andi.

Soon after the contentious court battle, Andi, who had been duped by Edward Norton’s Miles Bron in a brutal business arrangement, surprises the characters by joining them on vacation, but there’s more going on than first appears. The revelation reveals that Andi had already been murdered by Miles earlier and that her identical twin sister Helen had taken Andi’s place in order to find the real murderer.

In an interview with The Wrap, Johnson acknowledged his hesitation about implementing the “terrible cliche” of a hidden twin but ultimately came to the conclusion that it was the best course of action.

The main point, I suppose, was that it couldn’t just be a matter of viewing it from a different perspective. The basic perspective shift must be significant enough to create a new tension when all the various scenes are repeated. The concept of twins originated from this. I was led, kicking and screaming, to identical twins by the process. Given that it seemed like a terrible trope, I didn’t want to do it. Will the audience ever pardon me for this, I wondered. I believe we get away with it because it doesn’t feel like a big surprise at the conclusion but rather a complication in the midst that deepens the stakes and the plot.

Knives Out and Glass Onion both topped Netflix’s Top 10 ranking earlier today, with the former becoming the platform’s most-watched English-language film the previous week. Glass Onion, which has only been available for 10 days, is currently the third most-watched movie ever on the streaming service with 127.25M hours viewed, just behind Red Notice (364.02M hours) and Don’t Look Up (359.79M hours). It’s likely that Benoit Blanc will surpass all other artists very soon.
