Steve Guttenberg is ready for his third film “Three Men and a Baby”
Steve Guttenberg is prepared to create a trilogy out of his two favorite movies. The 1980s icon recently gave a lengthy interview to the news, revealing that the prospect of working again with Tom Selleck and Ted Danson on the third installment of the Three Men and a Baby series has him pretty enthusiastic.
“I enjoyed working with those guys so much,” the 64-year-old stage, screen, and TV actor say. “And I still believe there’s another movie with us, whether it’s A Three Men or Fathers of the Bride. Honestly, people would love it.”
The largest movie office success of 1987, was Three Men and a Baby, starring Guttenberg, Danson, and Selleck. In the 1990 follow-up Three Men and a Little Lady, the trio played their roles once more.
If his friends are up for it, Gutenberg is willing to end the series with a third movie, but he acknowledges that the original movie would be incomplete without Leonard Nimoy, who directed it.
“It was four men and a baby,” Guttenberg recalls fondly of the late actor-director. “Leonard was a very, very bright guy. It was supposed to be directed by Coline Serreau, who directed the first one in France. But she had a falling out with the studio. And I’ll never forget, [then Disney CEO] Jeffrey Katzenberg called me and said, ‘We still want to do the picture. We’re thinking about Leonard Nimoy to direct it.’ ”
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1985) were two of the sci-fi franchise’s most popular films, and by that time, the Star Trek legend had shown he was more than adequate behind the camera (1986).
“Ted, Tom, and myself all had to sign off, so I told Jeffrey that I would go to Leonard’s house and meet him. I was auditioning Leonard,” he says with a laugh. “I’ll never forget, his mother was there and had made stuffed cabbage. Leonard had already built a model of the set. He wanted me to give the okay that I would do the picture with him. And I did. We all did.”
Guttenberg also remembers the moment he realized what huge stars his other two cast mates were with affection.
He tells supporters going crazy, “God, you strolled down the block with those two men, forget it.” “Tom could shut down an entire ice hockey rink. They would all exclaim, “Oh, my God!””
As he discusses his desire for the original performers to come back to close up the story, Guttenberg finds the idea of a Three Men and a Baby revival to be not all that exciting. “I believe that what matters most is that it satisfies that audience because people desire to be reminded of a happier time. A sequel serves as a reminder of what came before. You can return to that later.”
