Paul Feig and Sam Raimi, two famous players in the genre, will collaborate to create a film version of a novel that defies categorization. Maureen Kilmer’s book Suburban Hell has been acquired by Legendary Pictures, Feigco Entertainment, and Ghost House for the big screen. Deadline has the latest on the adaptation. Joanna Calo will write the screenplay, while Feig and Laura Fischer of Feigco Entertainment, as well as Raimi and Rob Tapert of Ghost House, have signed on to produce. Jose Casas and Romel Adam will be in charge of Ghost House.

The story, which was just released last year, centers on Amy Foster, who relocates from the city to the suburbs and develops a strong friendship with a group of suburban moms. However, this newfound friendship is put to the test when one of the group members is overtaken by an evil spirit. It should come as no surprise that Raimi is on board to produce as Kilmer admitted to Writer’s Digest that the horror classic The Exorcist served as a major source of inspiration for her. In addition to directing Spider-Man and its succeeding sequels, which starred Tobey Maguire, Raimi has dedicated a long time to the horror genre, going all the way back to 1981’s The Evil Dead, which he wrote, produced, and directed.

Feig, who is working with Raimi on this novel adaptation as a producer, is a similarly devoted supporter of the comedy film genre. Feig is well-known for producing and writing the Emmy-winning comic television series Freaks and Geeks as well as for directing the popular 2011 female ensemble comedy Bridesmaids. Raimi and Feig are the ideal partners to bring this genre-defying book, Suburban Hell, to the big screen because of their outstanding track records in their favorite genre.

Joanna Calo, a screenwriter who has been on a roll lately, will be working alongside Raimi and Feig on this film adaptation. Calo has enjoyed enormous success with the comedy-drama series The Bear on FX. Calo played the multifaceted roles of co-showrunner, writer, producer, and director on the critically acclaimed television series The Bear, which was just renewed for a second season and honored with Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe awards. The Bear is evidence that Calo can successfully combine comedy with drama, and the adaptation of the comic-horror book Suburban Hell should be equally successful.

Beyond the script and production staff, little else is known about the Suburban Hell film adaptation. It might take some time before this demonic comedy arrives in theatres as the director, cast, and release date are all now unknown. The School for Good and Evil, a 2022 fantasy movie directed by Paul Feig, is currently streaming on Netflix.
