The Conjuring movie was in production, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick would write the script once more. The scripts for both The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: Devil Made Me Do It was written by Johnson-McGoldrick in the past. The third Conjuring film helped the series reach over $2 billion at the box office globally in 2021, making it the most lucrative horror franchise in history.

The Conjuring director James Wan sat down with Collider’s resident horror expert Alyse Wax to promote his new killer doll horror film M3GAN. Wax made sure to inquire about the upcoming Conjuring movie and Wan’s future plans for the series throughout their talk. Wan was eager to reassure the audience that he holds this property close and dear and that the writing staff will take great care while developing a story about Ed and Lorraine Warren. He stated:

“Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it’s the right thing, the right story that we’re telling.”

Wax questioned Wan if this upcoming Conjuring movie would actually be the final one after hearing about “possibly tying up” the series. You’ll be happy to know that when Wan was asked for confirmation, his reaction was, “I’m ready to watch as many of these films as they’re prepared to create.” “Never do we know. You can’t be sure. We’ll see.”

The fourth movie’s actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are confirmed to return in their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren, along with Johnson-McGoldrick returning to script it. There isn’t much else known about the next sequel, although the franchise’s main films always use the case files of the genuine Warrens as inspiration for their plots. That doesn’t really focus it too much, though, given their iconic case files include information on thousands of hauntings. No other cast members have been revealed as of yet, and based on Wan’s statements, it seems that the fourth movie’s plot is still being worked on.

Although a filmmaker has not yet been chosen for The Conjuring 4, Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is now filming The Nun 2, a prequel to the movie. Taissa Farmiga will reprise her role as Sister Irene in the sequel to The Nun, and director James Wan has hinted that both Farmiga sisters may cross paths in the story.
