Brendan Fraser remembers his past consideration for the role of Superman
Brendan Fraser came close to becoming Superman at one time, despite not being entirely convinced he wanted the role. On Tuesday, when the Academy Award-nominated actor appeared as a guest on The Howard Stern Show, host Howard Stern recalled rumors’ that Fraser, 54, was considered for the part when J.J. Abrams was working on the project that would eventually become Superman Returns in 2006.
“Everyone in town was reading for Superman. Again, [they were] testing maybe 6 or 7 guys in 2002, 2003,” Fraser said, after Stern, 69, asked whether the part was “the role that got away.”
The Whale actor acknowledged he was afraid to fully commit to the legendary superhero role because the late Paul Walker had tried out for Superman “before me” with a number of other “usual suspects” at the time.
“Of course, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, but I had to come to terms with the possibility that I might actually land the role of the Man of Steel. Your gravestone will have chips in it. Do you consent to that? You’ll always be referred to as “the Man of Steel,” “Fraser spoke with Stern.
Fraser acknowledged that his personal decision-making “was a kind of Faustian deal” because he was aware that he “didn’t want to be renowned for only one thing because I prided myself on diversification my entire professional life.”
When asked how it made him feel not to get the job—Brandon Routh ended up playing Superman in Superman Returns—Fraser stated that the studio “probably” saw he wouldn’t have given the character his all.
“I felt disappointed that there was an amazing opportunity and it didn’t come to fruition,” the actor said. “It had to a lot with some shenanigans and studio politics, and probably, probably inherently, in my screen test — I think that’s why you test — they could kind of see I was only there like, 98 percent.”
Fraser also discussed why he did not care whether he received a Golden Globe nomination this year after Austin Butler’s win for Elvis in his category back in January during another segment of his visit on Stern’s show.
“It doesn’t matter if you get it or not. The fact that I wouldn’t care makes a difference, “Fraser, who has asserted that he was sexually assaulted in 2003 by former Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Philip Berk, stated. (Berk disputes the allegations.) “I do not desire it. I didn’t request to be taken into account; it was assumed. I’m aware that would offend a lot of people for a variety of reasons, but…”
Fraser went on, “I didn’t need them; they needed me. Because it wouldn’t have any significance for me. I need a place to hang that hood decoration. How would I use that?”
