“Evil Dead Rising” shows the blood-soaked chaos of the film
In recent years, horror has flourished, and thus far in 2023, things are no different. In addition to the genre’s ongoing success, numerous venerable properties have come back from the dead. In the appropriately named Evil Dead Rise, one of the upcoming franchises making a lethal comeback is the Evil Dead series. With just a few short months until the movie’s debut, Rise’s marketing has been gradually ratcheting up its intensity. The upcoming subscriber cover for Fangoria Magazine will feature Evil Dead Rise, it has been confirmed.
There are four new photographs from Rise on the cover (subscriber cover #19) itself. The cover’s main image shows Lily Sullivan’s Beth splattered in blood, wielding the series’ iconic weapon, a cool chainsaw, and sporting a crazy expression.
The weapon has appeared in all of the Evil Dead films and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, but this specific scene reminds me of the shocking conclusion of Evil Dead (2013), in which Jane Levy’s Mia sawed a Deadite in half while blood-soaked rain fell from the sky. The first trailer for Rise suggests that the movie will be more in the 2013 film’s tone than in the campy horror style of the first three Evil Dead movies. Fans may get a terrific preview of Rise’s creative direction through this cover image. Using Sam Raimi’s original chaotic aesthetic as a starting point, director Lee Cronin appears to be giving the audience a disturbing new perspective as they hopelessly stare at a chainsaw-filled doom.
The film’s Deadites are depicted in the other three, smaller photographs, two of which are of Beth’s sister Ellie, who is portrayed by Alyssa Sutherland. In the movie, Ellie is trying to raise her small children in a Los Angeles high rise while Beth and Ellie have been estranged for a long time. Following the Necronomicon’s discovery, their family reunion swiftly turns into a nightmare.
While the tale isn’t truly revealed on the cover, there are plenty of amusing Easter eggs from the franchise’s past, such as the text “Dead By Dawn” above the picture of an unidentified Deadite. This was Evil Dead 2’s original subtitle. In addition, there’s a clever wordplay going on here with “Hex in the City,” which is a parody of the popular series Sex in the City.
The franchise’s longest feature, Evil Dead Rising, will be released on April 21, 2023, in theatres worldwide. Fangoria’s Rising issue is currently available for pre-order on their website until then. Even better, you can save 25% on a yearly Fangoria subscription if you use the code “EVILDEADRISE.”
