Hypnotic, the forthcoming thriller from renowned director Robert Rodriguez, has now received its debut trailer. Variety has unveiled an exclusive shot from the movie that features actor Ben Affleck in action. A logline for the movie Hypnotic states that Affleck will play a detective who is looking into a string of bizarre crimes while looking for his missing daughter, whose absence is connected to a top-secret government program. Plot information for the movie is still scarce.

Affleck is seen holding up what appears to be a Polaroid photo of his daughter in the first image provided by Variety, his face bearing a concerned expression. Affleck will be joined by a large ensemble cast in Hypnotic, which also includes Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Hala Finley, Dayo Okeniyi, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley, and William Fichtner. There isn’t much information available about the roles they will play, other than the fact that Finley will play Affleck’s missing daughter.

Rodriguez will reportedly show a rough version of Hypnotic on March 12 at the forthcoming SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, in addition to the first peek. Although the movie is still being edited, festivalgoers will get a preview of what the finished version of Hypnotic might look like. Rodriguez is no stranger to SXSW; the Texas native had his 2019 movie Red 11’s world premiere there.

Together with Jeff Robinov and John Graham for Studio 8, Mark Gill, Guy Botham, Lisa Ellzey, and Rodriguez’s son Racer Rodriguez, Rodriguez will produce Hypnotic under his Troublemaker Studios label. Studio 8 and Gill’s Solstice Studios initially worked on the movie together, but Solstice later sold the distribution rights to Ketchup Entertainment. Together with Racer and Max Borenstein, Rodriguez wrote the script in addition to directing and producing.

Rodriguez, who is best known for big-budget tentpoles like the Sin City and Spy Kids series, is working on a passion project called Hypnotic. He also directed The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, a cult favorite from 2005. In a prior interview with Collider, Rodriguez revealed that he had been planning Hypnotic for the past 20 years and called it “a Hitchcock thriller on steroids.” The movie, he continued, was “extremely dynamic” and had “a lot of twists and turns.”

In the meantime, Affleck is gearing up for his upcoming film, Air, as a director. The movie, in which Affleck and Matt Damon also appear, will tell the inside story of Nike’s efforts to get a sneaker deal with NBA icon Michael Jordan. In the next DC movie The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, he is also expected to reprise his role as Batman.
