Hayden Panettiere claims she took four years off for “mental health” reasons

According to Hayden Panettiere, she “willed” her Scream character Kirby “back into being” so that she could return to the venerable horror series.

The 33-year-old actress admitted to cohost Michael Strahan during her Monday interview on Good Morning America that she “didn’t know what I wanted to do next” after taking a four-year break from acting until being offered the chance to return to Scream for its sixth season.

Panettiere, whose role on the television series Nashville ended in 2018, stated, “I did have to take those four years off, and thank God I did. “I had to take care of my physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. I was thinking, “I want to be part of that again,” when [Scream] reappeared and came back.”

“Kirby was someone I [had] thought was still around. I wished for her to return “She continued by describing her return to the franchise. “I rang them. When I heard they were filming Scream 5, I actually called them and said, “Without me? Hold on, I might still be alive and I could be useful.””

Being the best friend of Emma Roberts’ character Jill, Panettiere’s Kirby plays a big role in Scream 4 (2011), but her future was mostly left unresolved as more than ten years passed between sequels in the meta-slasher series.

Panettiere admitted that she started the process herself when the question of how she learned that Kirby would return was put to her.

She informed Strahan, “I found out after I phoned them on the phone and I forced them [to add Kirby in]. “Well, that’s a terrific concept, they said. We didn’t know [she was alive], but we’re going to add that and do it this way.”

Eagle-eyed Easter eggs in the fifth Scream movie from 2022 appeared to corroborate Kirby’s continued existence, while many media publications had already reported Panettiere’s return for Scream VI in May 2022.

“They prefer to preserve their secrets,” the actress remarked of how exactly Kirby will be re-introduced to the franchise.

Panettiere previously revealed to the news in July 2022 about surviving an abusive relationship with Brian Hickerson, whom she dated on and off for about four years starting in 2018. Hickerson passed away in February at the age of 28. Panettiere’s younger brother Jansen passed away aged 28 in February.

She referred to her ex-actions boyfriend as “none of it is OK,” and she wanted to make sure that everyone understood this. Hickerson was charged with domestic violence several times while they were together, and after pleading no contest to two felony counts of hurting a partner, he was sentenced to 13 days in jail in 2021.
