Judy Blume explores the author’s legacy in the “Judy Blume Forever” trailer
The planned movie Judy Blume Forever is going to be a biography of renowned novelist Judy Blume. The Judy Blume Forever teaser was released exclusively on Wednesday by Imagine Documentaries and Amazon Video along with the news. As filmmakers Davina Pardo and Leah Wolchok explore the author’s “journey from fearful, imaginative child to storytelling pioneer who elevated the physical and emotional lives of kids and teens, to a banned writer who continues to fight back against censorship today,” the documentary’s trailer demonstrates Blume’s, 85, impact on her fans. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
The movie features animated elements meant to “highlight the wonder and awkwardness of being young,” as well as interviews with writers, artists, and fans who are honoring Blume’s legacy.
The documentary is focused on “the lady whose trailblazing writings revolutionized the way millions of readers perceive themselves, their sexuality, and what it means to grow up,” according to an official synopsis.
“Everything I learned about sex or crushes, I learned from Judy,” Molly Ringwald says in the trailer.
According to a statement from co-director Wolchok to the press, the filmmakers “intended to examine why Judy was drawn to write about the cusp, that transitory phase between childhood and adolescence” with the film.
In order to find her voice, a woman has to push back against conventional expectations, according to Wolchok, who intended to tell a feminist coming-of-age story about the subject. And by discovering her voice, she transformed both her own life and the lives of many readers.
Wolchok continues by stating that she and Pardo were taken aback by Blume’s “fierce defiance to right-wing censors” throughout her career, and Pardo expresses surprise at the volume of fan mail the author receives.
Youngsters poured their hearts out to her, and she wrote back frequently, according to Pardo. “She even maintained long-term correspondence with several readers. The letters’ degree of intimacy revealed so much to us about the readers’ feelings of connection to Judy and the importance of a book providing a sense of security for children.”
There are other Blume-related movies coming out in April in addition to the one from Imagine Documentaries. Are You There God, written by Blume in 1970, will be adapted by Lionsgate and released on April 28. Abby Ryder Fortson plays the titular 11-year-old in the film It’s Me, Margaret. Her mother Barbara is portrayed by Rachel McAdams, and her grandma Sylvia is portrayed by Kathy Bates. On April 21, Judy Blume Forever will start to stream on Amazon Video.
