Shakira talks about “This Difficult Year” and her split from Gerard Piqué
Shakira refused to let a “really hard year” stand in the way of the creation of her most recent song which broke records. The 46-year-old musician appeared on The Tonight Show to chat with Jimmy Fallon about her track “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” and how she collaborated with artist Bizarrap on the song.
“The issue with this song is that so many women around the world now consider it to be their anthem. After my separation, I had a very difficult year, which is why I felt it was so necessary to write this song “She stated, indicating the date of her divorce from longtime partner Gerard Piqué in June 2022.
It has served as a constructive outlet for my feelings.
The song not only assisted Shakira in breaking 14 world records, but the lyrics also appear to make reference to the breakup, its fallout, and Piqué’s 36-year-old current girlfriend, Clara Chia Marti. “You go about saying you’re a champion / And when I needed you / You offered your worst version,” she sings in the song.
Shakira admitted on Fallon, “I honestly felt like I don’t even have fans out there after we put out this song. “I have a sisterhood of women who have experienced the same things as I have, who think the way I think, who feel the way I feel, and who had to put up with so much garbage the way I had to,” she said.
She added, “And you know, I did write the song for me. But I also think it was meant to be, perhaps for the many women who also needed a platform and a voice to speak for themselves in a variety of contexts.
Milan, the 10-year-old son of Shakira and Piqué, was the one who persuaded her to collaborate with Bizarrap, Shakira said during the conversation.
“Mum, you’ve got to work with Bizarrap, he said to me. You need to collaborate with Bizarrap on a song because you two are going to be successful “Fallon heard from Shakira. “He also left my boss, Jaime, a voicemail. You need to collaborate with my mom and Bizarrap on a song because they’re going to be No. 1, he added. He was correct, too.”
Shakira, who is also the mother of Piqué’s 8-year-old daughter Sasha, made her split from the soccer player public in June of last year after initially announcing it in March 2011. During the set of her music video for “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” which served as the FIFA World Cup 2010’s anthem, they first got to know one another.
In a joint statement, the couple expressed their regret at having to announce their separation. “Since the safety of our children is our top priority right now, we kindly request your respect for their privacy. I sincerely appreciate your consideration and respect.”
Since then, Piqué and his girlfriend Clara Chia Mart, 23, have made their relationship official on Instagram, and Shakira has produced three songs that appear to be a reference to their breakup. Another is “TQG,” a duet with fellow Colombian superstar Karol G in which they sing about seeing a previous partner find new love.
Shakira sung in Spanish, “Seeing you with the new one upset me / But I’m already established by myself. You are no longer allowed here. I noticed that your girlfriend hurled something at me. It doesn’t make me furious, it makes me laugh. What we lived I forgot. And that’s what angered you. That even life improved me.
Shakira also says in the chorus of her most recent international hit with Bizarrap, “I’m too good for you, and that’s why you’re with someone just like you,”
I don’t even know what happened to you / I wish you success with my purported substitute, she sang. “I’m equivalent to two 22-year-olds. You sold a Ferrari for a Twingo, a Rolex for a Casio, and you’re moving too quickly. Spend a lot of time working out, but your brain also needs some exercise.”
