The beard on Captain America was too good for this world
The majority of the controversy surrounding the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer in 2017 revolved around Chris Evans’ (Captain America’s) covert unveiling of his new rough beard. Does America’s clean-shaven golden boy have facial hair? The majesty of planet Earth rumbled, creating lives and shattering hearts. Many hearts were broken as Cap’s beard disappeared (or was it dusted? Between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, I’ll see myself out. Even though we could have all basked in its splendor for all of eternity, it was simply too powerful an entity to last beyond one film.
Putting jokes aside for the moment, Cap Beard was a wise styling decision, especially for Infinity War. Steve Rogers was last seen by viewers during the Captain America: Civil War epilogue, when he put down his shield and freed his fellow Avengers: Team Cap Edition members from a high-security underwater jail. The Sokovia Accords had been breached by the whole team of Team Cap, which infuriated the UN. As a result, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) all fled into hiding.
By the time the Infinity War events begin, several years have passed. As the script is already crammed full, the movie may not go into detail about every Team Cap member’s renegade exploits. Instead, the creators use a visual narrative shorthand to imply the passage of time. Although Steve’s beard is surprising, Natasha’s Targaryen-blonde bob is remarkable. Steve’s expression shows how much he has changed and the experiences he has had while running from the law; to be honest, he has undoubtedly witnessed some horrible things.
This idea may seem absurd at first, but the man’s beard gives the impression that he is a real person who doesn’t need to be explained. We now have a seasoned, mature man in place of the neat-cut hero who was dressed in all of his vibrant hues. It’s a tough appearance that goes well with the deeper hues of his new suit. This Steve has experienced numerous wars and has come to understand their true seriousness. As a result, Cap Beard establishes the appropriate tone for his persona at this particular period.
No discussion of the beard can ignore its first appearance. The very definition of chills is Steve’s arrival, especially with Wanda and Vision standing at death’s door. The identifiable figure that was hidden in the shadows behind the moving train emerges into the light while vigorously swinging his beard, which may have destroyed the Titanic. It is clear that Steve Rogers means business when he arrives without a shield yet still threatening. He caused Thanos’s (Josh Brolin) senior lieutenant, Proxima Midnight (Carrie Coon), to pause. (No surprise. Steve has matured into the young man he was in 2011, becoming, well, as old as his calendar age.
Who else is strong enough to effortlessly catch and hold a spear in midair? Who else has the strength to hold back an Infinity Gloved Thanos and cry wordless defiance while gazing into his eyes? In fact, even Thanos says, “Damn, bro.” The Russo Brothers informed me that Cap Beard is canon and was a biological development that enhanced the Super Soldier Serum’s abilities. Sam and Natasha, who are both more than capable, are elevated by the beard. The superhero trio causes Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glave (Michael James Shaw) to retreat with their tails between their legs as they battle in ballet-fluid coordination.
Let’s also talk about how Steve’s (bearded) appearance makes his teammates feel more at ease. The expressions on Wanda’s face—exhausted and relieved—and that of Vision—half-wicked grin—speak for themselves: for the time being, everything will be okay. I would go into combat with a man for an issue as tiny as a hangnail or as vast as the world if he could elicit that degree of loyalty from his allies and protect them without reservation. Get this man a shield is a quote that Wakanda’s loving monarch T’Challa (a much-missed Chadwick Boseman) would only utter regarding Bearded Cap.
As Steve takes on Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt), the irate Secretary of State who locked Team Cap in that subterranean prison, it’s amazing to watch. Ross is calmly informed by Steve that “I’m not looking for forgiveness” and “I’m gone past asking for permission.” Bring on the standing ovation! Contrary to a common belief, Steve Rogers never adhered to the rules.
