Global health leaders are planning to call for a review of the international measures taken to combat with coronavirus pandemic.

The World Health Organization will conduct a virtual meeting on Monday and Tuesday for the 73rd assembly of the UN body. In this meeting, representatives from 194 of WHO’s member states will meet.

Globally, 4,804,846 people have been infected from Covid-19. Out of these, 316,711 people have died whereas 1,858,806 have recovered. There are 2,629,329 active cases worldwide.

Several questions will be raised over how the WHO and member states have dealt with coronavirus pandemic.

The European Union is likely to lead the international conference. Countries including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand will also lead the call to inquire how countries are handling the global pandemic and what lessons can be learned.

Member countries come together under one roof at the World Health Assembly to and review the performances of the UN’s health agencies. They also plan their priorities for the coming year.

EU spokeswoman Virginie Battu-Henriksson said that many questions will be discussed in the meeting.

“How did this pandemic spread? What is the epidemiology behind it? All this is absolutely crucial for us going forward to avoid another pandemic of this kind.”

But she also clarified that this is not the right time to enter “any sort of blame game”.

WHO spokeswoman Dr. Margaret Harris said: “The World Health Assembly is always the time for a lot of scrutinies [of the WHO].”

She also said that the organization would be “laser-focused” on considering the overall response, and the solutions of the pandemic.
