As our kidneys typically filter wastes and excess fluids from the blood, which are then removed in our urine, chronic kidney disease (CKD) or chronic kidney failure means a gradual loss of kidney function. However, if kidney disease is diagnosed, it will have an impact on one’s overall well-being. If you have advanced chronic kidney disease, you won’t be able to do the things you need to do every day, and you may even need a kidney transplant to live.

“Having diabetes, obesity, smoking, age, polycystic kidney disease or other inherited kidney diseases, heart disease, recurrent kidney infection known as pyelonephritis, and taking medications that can damage the kidneys are some of the factors leading to kidney disease,” Dr. Bhavin Patel, Consultant Urologist at Zen Multispecialty Hospital, stated in an interview.

He emphasized the importance of keeping an eye out for signs and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, a lack of appetite, weakness, inability to sleep, frequent or less frequent urination, muscle cramps, foot and ankle swelling, dry, itchy skin, hypertension, inability to breathe as a result of fluid buildup in the lungs, and even chest pain. “Fluid retention causing swelling in your arms and legs, high blood pressure, anaemia, heart disease, weak bones and an increased risk of bone fractures damaged central nervous system, low immunity, infections, and pregnancy complications,” he said in reference to the complications.

He suggests the following preventative measures for chronic kidney disease (CKD):  Don’t forget to get checked out on a regular basis: If you have a higher risk of developing kidney disease, you will need to see your treating physician on a regular basis for health checks and follow-ups.
