Trump impeachment trial-What happened in the Senate?
Lawyers representing US President have started defending themselves of the President in his impeachment trial in the Senate.
Democratic congressmen, who acted as prosecutors in the trial, have presented particular evidence over three days. They gave their statement that Trump had misused his power.
They blamed the president that he had forced Ukrainian president to investigate about Joe Biden, his rival. They also alleged that Trump had hidden evidence from congress.
Proceedings were started with a battle between the Democrats and the Republicans.
Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested a two-day limit for beginning arguments by both sides. But the Democrats protested and days extended to three.
McConnell has delayed the proceedings until next week debate and Democrats will enable new witnesses to appear. Fresh evidence to be submitted as well.
Adam Smith, Democratic congressmen, started open arguments to a packed Senate Chamber last Wednesday.
US President Donald Trump and senior Republicans said that Joe Biden and his son were doing corrupt business tasks in Ukraine.
President’s lawyer said he had done “absolutely nothing wrong” as they opened their defense.
It should be remembered that Democrats rejected witness swap with the Republicans in President Trump’s impeachment trial.
The lawmakers wanted the son to act as a witness.
However, Democrats did not allow the son of the former US Vice-President Joe Biden to appear as the witness.
Note that the trial may end next week, but Trump’s supporter republicans will not expel him.
Donald Trump, while speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said that he might oppose the Democrats by appearing to “sit right in the front row and stare at their corrupt faces”.
