Australia has dealt with the deadliest day of coronavirus pandemic due to the second wave in Melbourne.
Victoria has reported 19 deaths on Monday whereas it has seen about two-thirds of Australia’s total 314 deaths and approximately 21,400 infections.
Victoria has reported more than 100 deaths in just the last week and 322 new cases on Monday. Other states reported few or no cases.
However, the rate of daily infections has decreased in recent days. Melbourne’s second lockdown began over a month ago.
Residents have been witnessing a night-time curfew and stricter requirements since 3 August.
As per the lockdown restrictions, workers must have a permit to leave home. Wearing face masks have been made mandatory whereas all non-essential businesses have been closed.
Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews said that it was too early to determine whether the state was at a turning point. But he said, “we’re certainly seeing some greater stability” following the stricter measures.
“It’s always better to be lower than the previous day, but it is only one day’s data,” he said.
