According to military officials, one person was killed and two others were rescued after a US Navy E2-D plane crashed near Chincoteague in Accomack County on Wednesday night.

According to Lt. Cmdr. Rob Myers, a public affairs officer with Naval Air Force Atlantic, the plane went down during a routine exercise around 7:30 p.m.

There were three people on board in total. Myers said the US Coast Guard rescued two injured people and discovered one dead in the aircraft.

The plane is assigned to an East Coast Airborne Command and Control Squadron and is based at Naval Station Norfolk.

According to Naval Air Force Atlantic Public Affairs, the two crewmembers have non-life-threatening injuries.

Once the next of kin has been notified, the name of the deceased crew member will be released.

The incident is being investigated, according to the Navy.

Crews from the Coast Guard’s Mid-Atlantic region confirmed to WAVY that they responded to a downed aircraft in the water near Wildcat Marsh.

The Coast Guard launched a helicopter from an Elizabeth City station and a boat from Chincoteague Island by the coast guard.

NASA’s emergency response crews responded around 7:45 p.m. after receiving a report of a Navy aircraft down near Wallops Island, according to NASA officials.

Congresswoman Elaine Luria (D-Norfolk) issued a statement on the crash on Wednesday night via Twitter.

“I’m continuing to monitor the Navy plane crash in Accomack County.

“I’m keeping our naval aviators, their families, and our first responders in my thoughts and prayers tonight as rescue and recovery efforts continue.”
