Every year, Oscar attendees appear to wear a ribbon or button to highlight a particular cause that is prominent at the time.
According to Showbiz411, this year’s ribbon will be blue in support of Ukraine, which is embroiled in a bloody conflict with Russia.
According to reports, the blue ribbon will be a loop with the hashtag #withrefugees on the side.
The Oscars will be broadcast live from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET and in over 200 countries around the world.
Jennifer Garner, Lady Gaga, Mila Kunis, Uma Thurman, Serena Williams, and Lily James are among the presenters.
Will Smith, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart, Kenneth Branagh, and Nicole Kidman are among the nominees.
The UN Refugee Agency distributes the ribbons, and an image was shared by UNHCR.
According to Leah Sydney of Showbiz411, the agency “put together this campaign for the celebrities and more to wear the ribbons to demonstrate the plight of refugees not only in Ukraine, but for the 85 million that are displaced around the world.”
Anadil Hossain, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ Principal Communications Advisor, collaborated with Social Impact Strategist Bonnie Abaunza to create this outreach.
‘This notes that this year’s Oscar nominated films include some powerful stories centred on the themes of refugees, displacement, home, and belonging — Encanto, Flee, Three Songs for Benazir, Belfast, and Dune — at a time when the world is witnessing the largest refugee crisis since World War II,’ said Hossain.
‘Artists have expressed their solidarity with Ukraine, and we wanted to ask them to extend this support to the nearly 84 million people who have been forced to flee.’ Whenever. Wherever.
‘While the ribbons are a symbolic visible gesture, we saw this an opportunity to message around a wider understanding and awareness of this global humanitarian crisis – as the nominated films this year have done with great imagination and empathy.’
Millie Mackintosh wore a blue and yellow ribbon to the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 on March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
And Jon Bernthal wore a blue and yellow ribbon to show his support for Ukraine as he arrived at the 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, February 27 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
Meanwhile, Sean Penn has threatened to publicly destroy his Oscars if Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is not given a platform at Sunday’s ceremony.
The 61-year-old actor, who won Best Actor awards for his roles in ‘Mystic River’ and ‘Milk,’ has urged the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to give the actor-turned-politician a chance to shine a light on his war-torn country, and has urged guests to ‘walk out’ of the show if it does not.
‘If that is what is happening, I would encourage everyone involved, even though it may be their moment, and I understand that, to celebrate their films, it is so much more importantly their moment to shine, and to protest and boycott that Academy Awards,’ he said on CNN. If it comes down to it, I’ll smelt mine in public when I return.
‘I hope that isn’t what happened.’ I hope there haven’t been arrogant people who consider themselves to be representatives of the greater good who have decided not to communicate with Ukraine’s leadership. So I’m hoping that’s not what happened, and I’m hoping that everyone walks out if it is.’
Sean, who is currently in Warsaw, Poland, for safety reasons, is filming a documentary for Vice about the Ukraine-Russia conflict and met with Zelensky earlier this week.
‘I think it’s a great opportunity to at least make a couple of comments.’ I have some jokes that sort of highlight the current situation. I mean, there are so many terrible things going on that it’s difficult to focus on just one.
‘I actually pitched because I wanted to find a way to have Zelenskyy satellite in or make a tape or something because there are so many eyes on the Oscars.’
‘I’m not afraid to go there, but I’m not going to produce the Oscars.’
