One hundred members of a California church opened their homes to Ukrainian refugees.
When the war broke out, Phil Metzger flew from Ukraine to California.
He has helped deliver medicines and evacuated families from danger.
The evangelical pastor knew he wanted to do more from his church in suburban San Diego.
He aspired to help the refugees of Ukraine.
“Who would ever imagine that a pipeline into America (for Ukrainians) would open through Mexico?”
“That just caught us all completely off guard,” He said.
Calvary San Diego is located about 8 miles north of the US-Mexico border in Chula Vista, California.
Metzger saw a chance to put the church’s teachings into action as an increasing number of Ukrainians crossed the border from Tijuana to seek asylum in the US.
Metzger says thousands of Ukrainians have crossed the border, and spent at least a night inside this church.
Several people have stayed at the homes of church members.
The people from church opened up their homes to give the refugees a comfortable place for stay.
Many also volunteered to drop off families at airports.
