After a hotel shooting and carjacking in Mississippi, five people were killed, including the suspect.

According to police, a suspected gunman accused of killing four people in two Mississippi cities on Wednesday was found dead following a standoff with cops at a convenience store.

According to Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer, it’s unclear how the suspect, Jeremy Reynolds, died.

Police said Reynolds, 32, barricaded himself inside the Gulfport business after reportedly shooting three people at a Biloxi hotel and carjacking and shooting a local public works worker.

Switzer identified the contractor as William Waltman, 52, who was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

Mohammed Moeini, 51, proprietor of the Broadway Inn in Biloxi; Laura Lehman, 61, a hotel resident and employee; and Chad Green, 55, a hotel maintenance worker, were the other three casualties.

“What started out as a typically beautiful day on our Mississippi Gulf Coast ended in tragedy” because of “one individual,” Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes told reporters. “It’s an unspeakable tragedy.”

Authorities were looking for a reason. It was unclear whether Reynolds had a relationship with the motel, according to Biloxi police spokesperson Capt. Milton Houseman.

According to Houseman, police were notified of reports of a shooting at the hotel shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. Officers recovered three bodies and learned that the suspect had stolen a car from one of the victims and driven east into Gulfport.

Authorities arrived at a report of a shooting and discovered Waltman, whose truck Reynolds reportedly stole, according to Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper.

Reynolds is accused of fleeing to the convenience store and assaulting two persons inside, according to Cooper. Cooper stated that they escaped while Reynolds remained inside.

Authorities sprayed tear gas into the store after attempting to communicate with Reynolds and receiving no reaction, according to Cooper. Cooper stated that police discovered his death inside a room within the store where a fire had been started.

Cooper said it was unclear whether Reynolds ignited the fire. Switzer stated that no shots were fired during the standoff, and Reynolds’ body was not harmed in any way.
